Artist Statement :

Saul McCoy is an illustrator whose work explores matters of the mind and heart—communicating what words often cannot. Centered on identity and concepts of manhood through a Black male lens, his work reflects both personal experience and broader cultural narratives.Characterized by bold lines, high-contrast color, and dynamic compositions, McCoy’s pieces draw from Southern California influences—sun, motion, action sports, and the energy of hip hop and rock. Recurring imagery, including faces and the scarab beetle, speaks to themes of transformation and change.Rooted in strong gesture drawing, his process prioritizes movement and feeling, using splatters, fades, and layered color to create tension between cohesion and contrast. Through this visual language, McCoy invites reflection, conversation, and connection—particularly for those who see themselves in the work.

Around this time I was in college, a tattoo apprentice, in a hip hop group, and heavily inspired i was putting paint on everything. I got asked to do some painting for a photo shoot and lead to more projects as well as a fashion show circa 2009
